Our story lies with the former owner of A L & G Abbott, Peter Robert Wilkinson. Beloved husband, cherished father and much loved grandfather to me and my cousins.
“We asked everyone to wear something blue”
Grandad was a classy man, and we wanted a funeral that reflected his sophistication and had a traditional feel to it. Abbotts were able to meet these needs and deliver the funeral with compassion.
As a family, we felt it was important that Grandad’s funeral reflected some part of him, so we asked everyone who was attending to wear something blue. Grandad was known for wearing blue, everyday, so not only did this add a touch of his personality but it was heartwarming that we were able to celebrate his life dressed in his favourite colour.
It was also important to us that he got to where he needed to be on the day in style. We chose the horse-drawn hearse as transport to the local church, and the cortege travelled through the village where he had lived for many years; which allowed old friends and neighbours to say their goodbyes. We chose the traditional hearse and two limousines as transport for the family to and from the crematorium. We also had many comments from friends and family about how beautiful the service was, particularly the music, as well as the flowers and horses; which looked so elegant with their navy blue plumes.
“The support from the staff at Abbotts on that day was heartfelt”
Lynne Wilkinson, Peter’s wife
All of the staff supported the family through this distressing time, whether that was during the process of arranging the funeral where they explained our choices compassionately and then on the day itself we knew we were in safe hands. On the day of the funeral it rained all day but Chris, our funeral director, and the bearers made sure we had umbrellas and got us into the car quickly. No detail was considered too small for the staff at Abbotts as our needs were consistently met, even down to the small details of us asking the bearers to wear pale blue ties instead of black. It was exactly the send off that Grandad would have wanted.
Abbotts also assisted us in setting up a donations and tributes page after the funeral which was on their website, and we asked for donations to support the hard work and commitment of Keech Hospice Care, the place where in his last few days Grandad was cared for, and was able to rest.
